Another one of my favorite movies is "Au Hasard Balthazar" by Robert Bresson. The story centers around, of all things, a mistreated donkey. His plight allows us to see the cruelty of the world around him. This is a very moving film. I first saw it many years ago at the Pacific Film Archives in Berkeley, California. For many years, it was not available in the U.S., until Criterion finally released a DVD version.
